10 Thoughts on Using Art in Interior Design

Woman hanging artwork for interior design.

It’s not just about chairs, tables and sofas. Incorporating artwork from the Kingsway-Lambton Art Show & Sale into your interior design transforms your space from functional to meaningful and expressive. Here are some thoughts on how to do it intentionally and beautifully, regardless of your style or budget.

1.    Start With the Art—or the Space?

There are two ways to think about this:

·       Art-first approach: Choose pieces you love, then build the room around them (great for bold or large works).

·       Space-first approach: Assess your room’s style, color palette, and scale, then find art that complements or contrasts.

Which approach will you take?

2.    Choose the Right Size & Scale

What is the right size of artwork for my room?

Oversized art can be a dramatic focal point (especially over sofas or beds). And small works are perfect in groups or for tighter spaces like hallways and nooks.

And here is an important tip: art should be about ⅔ the width of the furniture it hangs above.

3.    Coordinate With Your Colour Palette

Should you be concerned about the colour of your artwork? Well, you can pick art that echoes colours in your furnishings, rugs, or accessories. Or go for contrast—a vibrant piece in a neutral room can really pop.

4.    Consider the Style Match (or Intentional Clash)

These thoughts may help or hinder your decision on the art you bring into your interior design.

·       Minimalist interiors: bold abstract or black-and-white photography.

·       Traditional decor: oil paintings, landscapes, or classic prints.

·       Eclectic/boho: mix of textures, mediums, and cultural influences.

Don’t be afraid to mix modern and vintage—it adds depth and personality.

5.    Create a Gallery Wall

If you have the space, you may wish to consider installing a Gallery Wall. You can mix frame sizes and orientations for a casual feel—or keep it symmetrical for a formal look.

It really helps to plan the layout on the floor first or use paper templates on the wall.

Also, stick to a common thread (palette, frame color, theme) to unify the display.

6.    Get the Lighting Right

Lighting can really make your art come to life and make a bold statement as part of your interior design. Here’s a quick summary:

·       Use track lights, picture lights, or recessed lighting at a 30° angle.

·       Avoid direct sunlight to protect the artwork from fading.

·       Consider adding dimmers to control ambiance.

7.    Play With Placement

Does every piece of your artwork need to be hung on a wall? Most certainly, “no”. For example:

·       Lean large pieces on a mantel or against a wall.

·       Place smaller works on bookshelves, desks, or floating shelves.

Also, art in unexpected places—like kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways—adds delight and personality.

8.    Mind the Framing

Framing is a big subject. Frame styles should complement the artwork and the room. A simple black or white frame is versatile; ornate or gold frames suit classical rooms.

Matting adds breathing room and can help artwork feel elevated.

9.    Think About Mood

Your choice of artwork impacts the overall mood of a room, and makes a statement about you and your family at the same time.

·       Soft, organic art can make a room feel more relaxing.

·       Bold, colorful work adds energy.

·       Black-and-white or conceptual pieces can ground a minimalist space.

10.   Balance the Room Visually

Think of art as part of the room’s visual weight. If one wall has a heavy piece, balance it with something tall or sculptural elsewhere.

Art doesn’t always need to be centered—play with asymmetry for a modern look.

So, does this help you as you consider the artwork you choose for your home? A lot comes down to personal choice. It reflects who you are and what you value. Decorate your space for how you live and what you love.
